Hamza was admitted to the ICU
After being seen in the Emergency Department,
Hamza was admitted to the ICU, where he was
diagnosed with severe ARDS and placed on a
ventilator.
Due to refractory hypoxaemia, he was transferred
to extracorporeal membrane oxygenation
(ECMO). Samples were collected and sent to the
laboratory for testing.
Hamza showed signs of systemic infection,
including fever, and demonstrated malaise
and use of accessory muscles to support
breathing. He was diagnosed with influenza
infection, confirmed by reverse transcription
polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and
started on empiric broad-spectrum antibiotics.
* When the treatment failed, his antibiotics
were changed.
